: When the Byzantine Commune was proclaimed, we had a clear moral mandate to end the brutal colonial policies of the Old Republic in Africa— a clarion call to Quit Africa. Any attempt to address the myriad injustices and crimes of the capitalist regime must begin with the expropriation of the lands and resources of Subsaharan Africa.

: Three delegates from so-called “Byzantine Africa” have now come to detail their plans for the future.

Obviously, we need to do everything we can to restore the pre-colonial borders, and restore the nations of Matabele, Basotho, Gaza, Carthage… Carthage? Sorry, my mind slipped… Suazi, etc. as Communal Republics holding close to their old territories as possible. Of course, these small republics would be acutely vulnerable to attack by the neighboring colonial powers— or, for that matter, the fundamentally reactionary regime in Great Zimbabwe. I therefore propose leaving the former “Colonial Legion”– under African officers, of course– deployed in the region to dissuade foreign incursions.

Can we truly be free under the watchful eye of the enforcers of the old colonial order? In my efforts to organize the workers of Byzantine Kenya’s plantations into unions and drive the capitalist planter aristocracy out, we learned one lesson over and over again— we are stronger working together than standing apart. The old colonies of “Byzantine Africa” in the south and “Byzantine Kenya” in the north should be released as two confederations of their former states. These new states will be strong enough to resist foreign incursion— or at least hold out long enough for reinforcements from the other communist nations of the world to arrive. In any case, the Byzantine Commune is far from secure— wouldn’t you prefer the Colonial Legion be dispersed into the Red Guards and help defend your own borders?

We… I mean, the Byzantine Communes of Africa, of which I am but an impartial observer of, are working very hard to build socialism in Africa, but we… need more time. So… what if you just… left us there. Left them there. You know. To get on with creating a strong communist society.

Gameplay effects: If the Dissident Legionnaire wins, I’ll release all the African nations we conquered separately as dominions, and keep the Colonial Legion (around 24 regiments, IIRC) in Africa to defend them and protect their new governments from reactionary revolts. If the Union Man wins, they’ll be spun off as two Dynamic Dominions, which should be rather more substantial nations.
